Energy Management Solutions Seminar, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London

Rising data centre energy demand and cost, plus new legislative pressures, herald the arrival of an urgently needed new approach to energy efficiency!

At a presentation by Unite Technologies, in June 2008 at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, the company unveiled a highly cost-effective solution to immediately improve data centre energy efficiency, control ongoing cost and improve overall facility performance, with an example  250 cabinet data centre , achieving reduced energy costs of up to £350,000 per annum and that at present energy prices.

With energy unit costs predicted to continue to rise a further 70% by 2010, there is huge pressure on data centres to improve their energy efficiency. Unite Technologies claim that an existing data centre of 250 cabinets for example, with typically an energy bill of circa £1.2million, could be immediately reduced by £100,000 per annum by simply applying their new Energy Management Solution (EMS), which monitors and analyses data centre infrastructure and together with some relatively simple fine-tuning changes, can regain the far more efficient use of an existing resource. Or with a limited capital outlay, make an additional saving of £250,000 per annum, with the combined annual saving of £350,000 (30%) having a payback period of under 3 years and this at today’s energy prices.  An additional financial concern highlighted by Unite, is the UK Governments Carbon Reduction Commitment which is only18 months from becoming mandatory in 2010 for all companies using more than 6,000MWh, (typical for a 100 cabinet data centre with an energy bill of circa £0.5m per yr). Published “Name & Shame” league tables will be made public, in addition to the financial penalties for any eligible company not improving their CO2 emissions. 

New Energy Management Solution (EMS) to deliver major energy gains through better understanding and control of data centres

At the St. Paul’s Cathedral launch, Unite announced their Energy Management Solution (EMS) programme for data centres. Having gained significant expertise through designing and installing into data centre facilities for some of the worlds leading corporations, Unite Technologies have introduced their EMS, a comprehensive 3 phase programme, which achieves precise analysis of a data centres exact energy and environmental demands and overall operating efficiency, enabling them to make highly detailed, informed and quantifiable recommendations on improving a sites operational energy efficiency. With very little outlay, they claim to achieve immediate and significant cost reductions and a general improvement in facility performance, together with a phased programme to efficiently analyse, control, report and maintain ongoing performance, including future planning, best practices and the implementing of agreed changes, with measured and monitored gains against predicted targets. 

The key to EMS achieving immediate potential reductions in data centre energy costs is to be able to precisely map the energy demand over time throughout the entire facility and accurately highlight areas where demand is under or over utilised and make adjustments accordingly.

Governments Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme, enables additional savings 

As one of a select group of UK approved companies whose products and services have been independently assessed and certified by The Carbon Trust  on behalf of DEFRA, Unite Technologies have achieved ‘approved supplier’ status on the ETL (Energy Technology List). Investment in ETL products can assist businesses to reduce immediate and ongoing energy demand and therefore carbon footprint, which then qualifies for the governments Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme, enabling businesses to claim back 100% of capital allowances in their first year, against taxable profits.  

A £100,000 approved product installation could for example realise circa £28,000 in tax relief. 

New ‘non-invasive’ power measurement for legacy data centre

Also launched at the St. Paul’s Event and claimed a first for data centres, is Unite’s

CL-Amp® for the ‘non-invasive’ measurement of power feeds. Simply by placing the CL-Amp around any power cable (3 core and insulation), twisting to lock and connecting directly to one of Unite’s monitoring and control devices, real-time local and remote monitoring of current for any device or power strip rated up to 32A is enabled.
